Air Conditioner

Environmental responsibility does not have to interfere with comfort or come at a high cost.  Ergenics Solar Thermal Heating and Cooling is developing a solar hot water powered air conditioning system that will be a near drop-in replacement for conventional central air conditioners, but without fluorocarbon refrigerants.  The system is powered by the sun and does not use materials with global-warming-potential.

Inexpensive solar thermal collectors are used to capture free renewable energy from the sun, which is converted into cooling using a novel metal hydride-based heat pump.  In the winter, the heat pump can upgrade hot water temperature to a level suitable for baseboard-type heating. The hydride heat pump uses clean hydrogen as the working fluid in a hermetically sealed system.

The solar powered air conditioner offers the following features:

Summer:

· produces air conditioning that uses ten times less electricity and can operate on 12 VDC, if desired;

· eliminates toxic and/or global warming potential refrigerants;

· reduces carbon footprint, greenhouse gases and air pollution associated with electricity generation

· reduces peak summer loads, reduces stress on existing transmission and distribution infrastructure and defers need to expand transmission corridors;

· reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) associated with hot water-based space heating of residential, commercial and industrial facilities.

Spring and Fall:

· potential to dramatically reduce or eliminate heating fuel usage and associated pollution emissions.

Winter:

· Reduces heating fuel usage by up to 25%..
